Plus, the Atronach birth sign gives you a 50% chance to absorb the magicka from spells that are cast at you, and this is particularly useful when fighting magic foes as rather than their spell do you damage, you just absorb it and top yourself up.Įventually I completed the Mage's Guild quest line and in the last quest (i won't tell you what happens for risk of spoiling it for you), you get an amulet that gives you 25% magicka absorption. This worked ok and, being a sorceror, I was relying more on enchanted items than on casting that many spells.

When starting out, I had a Breton Sorceror, so I thought I'd join the Mage's Guild and get access to the free magicka restore potions in the chests at their guild halls. I found that the Atronach sign is not the easiest to play with if you are a magic character in the beginning. The only thing I didn't like about Bretons was the goofy sounds they made when they took damage in battle. Your Atronach effect of absorbing does counter elemental attacks and just about any other kind too. It also seems to fail in resisting Disintegrate Armor spells but that may be a bug and barely matters, I just noticed it once when I was 100% resistant and still got hit by a Hunger thingy. That resists things like blind or damage health or drain stamina or all sorts of stuff, but not Fire/Frost/Shock/Poison or (for some insane reason) paralyze. Just keep in mind that elemental attacks are not covered by your Breton resist magic in this game. You sure won't have to worry much about magic effect attacks. It is a great character for a beginner once you figure out the alchemy bit. Then you can just go back and buy hundreds of whichever ingredient you need, and have tons of restore magicka potions whenever you want them. Since even at low levels a couple of 1-septim ingredients can make a 40-gold potion, this won't be much of a problem. The trouble will not be rarity, it will be cost, and Frost Salts and the like cost a hell of a lot.įortunately, while you are doing this, you can also make this vendor stock other cheap ingredients in bulk, and make potions from those and sell them to him in order to get your money back-or sell them elsewhere, whatever you like.
Repeat, and he will sell 20 at a time, then 40, 80, 160, on and on. Then go back in and sell them back to him, at a bit of a loss presumably. If a vendor sells 5 comberry, just buy all 5, then come out of the buy/sell screen. You will have to buy them, but you can get unlimited tons of them in minutes if you have the cash. It is going to come down to potions, but ingredients are not as rare as you might think. You'll need to be more careful and strategic when planning wilderness journeys or missions, but once you get into the habit of it, it's actually rather fun. Be aware of your Magicka level and don't let it get so low that you'll be helpless in the case of an unexpected attack. If it helps, when playing Atronach characters try to think of Magicka as ammunition - a finite resource, unlike fatigue, which will spontaneously regenerate. At higher levels I find I often have far more of a Magicka reserve than I ever find myself using at one time. As you level up (and find various enchanted goodies) your Intelligence/Magicka capacity will increase.

Just make sure you have a full bar before going into any major fight. I always keep a few on me for emergencies, but I don't often find myself needing to use them. As a Breton you'll have a good Magicka resistance anyway, so (unlike the Altmer I typically play as) not dodging spells, ie actually letting yourself get hit in battle, might be a good strategy for you. The 50% spell absorption means that 50% of the time when a spell is cast on you, you'll absorb it instead of being effected by it. The easiest way to replenish your magicka is at a cult or tribunal shrine - so if you're in the middle of a cave-crawl or out in the wilderness somewhere all you have to do is Mark the spot you're standing on, Divine/Almsivi-teleport to a shrine, and then Recall back. Playing Atronach characters isn't as hard as some people make it out to be.
